Wait Times–What Are They Good For?

Posted by Rob on 20th September 2014 in Writing |

I’ve submitted a few stories recently, and I track my wait times in a little app I have on my PC.  But I don’t quite know what to think of them.  Sometimes, I’ll see a long wait time, and think “Great, maybe they’re considering it!”  And sometimes, I’ve even been right about that — for a while, I was stuck in the Land of Second Rounds, and not quite able to get out of it.

The trouble is, it’s not always that.

I’ve also had submissions go missing.  And I’ve had magazines not bother to respond until months after they said they would, and months after even my query.  In one case, I’d written off a story as a dead-letter and submitted it elsewhere, months before I actually got their rejection.  So I don’t really know what to think about it.  Part of me is optimistic — the other part thinks they lost my submissions.

I guess I’ll see, in time.  Like as not, it’ll turn out that they all ended up getting rejected at the second round…
